About MP Materials Corp.
Overview
MP Materials Corp. owns and operates the Mountain Pass rare earth mine and processing facility in California, the only integrated rare earth mining and processing site of scale in North America. The company supplies rare earth materials critical for electric vehicles, wind turbines, defense applications, and consumer electronics. MP Materials is executing a strategy to build a fully integrated US rare earth supply chain.
Operations
MP Materials operates the Mountain Pass mine in California's Mojave Desert, producing rare earth concentrate that is currently processed into separated rare earth oxides at third-party facilities in China. The site includes mining operations, a processing plant producing 40,000+ tonnes per year of rare earth oxide equivalent, and significant infrastructure. The company is the largest rare earth producer in the Western Hemisphere.
Strategy
The company's strategy focuses on optimizing Stage 1 operations producing rare earth concentrate, completing Stage 2 to bring rare earth oxide separation in-house at Mountain Pass, advancing Stage 3 to produce rare earth magnets domestically, reducing dependence on Chinese processing, securing long-term customer agreements with defense and commercial partners, and capitalizing on government support for critical mineral supply chains through Department of Defense contracts and other incentives.
Key Projects
Key projects include Stage 2 construction of rare earth oxide separation facilities at Mountain Pass (under construction, expected completion in 2025), Stage 3 development of neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) alloy and magnet manufacturing capability, and ongoing optimization and expansion of mining and concentration operations. MP Materials is receiving government funding and has secured offtake agreements with General Motors and other strategic partners.
